Weert Then and Now
Weert gun position, November 1944. 9th Medium Regiment moved to Weert for Operation Mallard to clear the Venlo-Roermond pocket. A well camouflaged position is seen using ammuntion boxes, branches, netting and 'found' items.
After a long search on Google Earth, I found the same spot today. The house remains. I expect the current owners are unaware that their garden once played a part in history! |
The gun in the photo was in this corner of the garden. Round window is the reference point. Now the garden is completely overgrown with shrubs preventing a clear comparison picture. A visit to the spot (July 2023) enabled some photos of the position to be taken.
Gun at Weert, well camouflaged with a net and garnish of fir tree. Rather than a gun pit, the detachment have built up a protective screen of ammunition boxes and what appears to be railway sleepers or salvaged items from the damaged house. A few shells are ready on a log platform in the foreground. Note the Sten gun leaning against the wicker screen.
This second image also shows another gun from the Regiment nearby. It is possible that it was this house photographed in July 2023. Locals said the property was rebuilt after the war in the same spot using materials from the original building.
